Aga Khan Mausoleum
Located in Aswan, the Aga Khan Mausoleum is the resting place of Sultan Mohammed Shah Aga Khan III. This elegant, marble tomb is on high ground on the west bank of the River Nile not far from the Monastery of St Simeon.
Aga Khan III was born in Karachi in 1877 and at the age of just 7 years old, he became the 48th Iman of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. At the time, Karachi was under British rule and Aga Khan III was educated at both Eton and Cambridge University. He developed a love of horse racing and owned a string of thoroughbred race horses, five of whom went on to win the Epsom Derby.
Under his control, the Ismaili community made great strides during the first part of the 20th century establishing a number of institutes for both social and economic development in East Africa and South Asia.
He died in 1957 and was buried in the mausoleum which is wife oversaw the construction. When she died in 2000, she was laid to rest alongside her husband.
